These nutty chocolate coated dates are a perfectly sized sweet treat! You need only 3 ingredients to make these delicious morsels and they can be whipped up in a flash! They make a great snack, are a nice sweet way end to a meal, and they look fancy enough to serve when company comes over!
Take a sweet Medjool date, coat it in a dark and slightly bitter chocolate, and add on a layer of crunchy salted almonds...it's a recipe for deliciousness!
These nutty chocolate coated dates take no time to prepare, and while I enjoy a Medjool date all by itself, the chocolate and nuts take it to a new level!
Ingredients
You only need 3 ingredients for this sweet treat:
- Medjool dates
- Semi-dark chocolate chips
- Chopped almonds
- Whole almonds or nuts for stuffing inside the date (optional)
Preparing the Ingredients
Remove the pits from the dates
Using a paring knife, cut into the date until you hit the pit inside. Gently pry open the date (you don't want to cut the date in half). Remove the pit.
Also be sure to remove the stem from the date, if there is one.
Melt the Chocolate
I wrote a post about How to Melt Chocolate and it doesn't involve the stove, a double boiler, or a microwave, and you never have to worry about burning the chocolate or dealing with hot glass bowls set over pots of boiling water.
The basic idea is that you put the chocolate chips in a bowl that you then set over a measuring cup that you fill with just-boiled water. The heat from the hot water heats the bowl and melts the chips. That's it! Aside from stirring the chocolate chips, you do not have to babysit it at all!
Chop the Nuts
Chop the almonds into small pieces. I use a knife because it's simpler, but you can also pulse the nuts in a mini chopper or food processor. You want the pieces to be small enough to coat the dates well.
How To Make Nutty Chocolate Coated Dates
Squeeze the dates back together so they are closed. If desired, stuff the dates with whole almonds (or other nuts) before closing them up. I, personally, really like the dates stuffed with whole almonds because there's more nut texture to balance the chewy dates.
Dip the dates, one at a time, into the melted chocolate, turning to coat completely.
Place the chocolate coated date into the chopped nuts and coat completely. Set aside on a plate and repeat with remaining dates. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes for the chocolate to harden.
How To Serve Them
Besides being super easy to make, they're perfect for serving up any time. Have one for a quick snack. Pack some for a hiking trip or in a packed lunch. Serve them with an afternoon tea, or they make a perfect sweet bite after a meal!
I love having these with a nice hot tea like Coffee Milk Tea or Poached Pear Ginger Tea. I also like them with a glass of Cold Brewed Coffee...the sweetness of the dates complement the bitterness of the coffee perfectly.

How Do You Store Them?
Store your chocolate coated dates in the fridge so the chocolate retains its hard shell texture. If you prefer your chocolate softer, simply let the dates sit out in room temperature for 5-10 minutes before devouring.
I love how easy this recipe is and how it can look so fancy! When I made these, the first thing I thought of was Almond Roca candy. They're not as squarish, but they make you do a double-take, right?? These nutty chocolate coated dates are, by far, much healthier than Almond Roca, of course...not to mention easier on the teeth!

Sweet & Nutty Chocolate Covered Dates
Ingredients
- 6 Medjool dates
- ¼ cup dark chocolate chips
- ¼ cup almonds
Optional:
- Whole almonds/nuts for stuffing inside the dates
Instructions
- Remove the pit from a date by making a cut on one side of the date with a paring knife until it hits the pit. Gently pry the date open and remove the pit, pressing the date closed after. Repeat with the remaining dates. Set aside.
- If desired, stuff each date with one or two whole almonds before pressing the date closed.
- Chop almonds into fine pieces. Place in a bowl and set aside.
- Place chocolate chips in a heat safe bowl set over a measuring cup filled with just-boiled water. Allow the heat to melt the chocolate chips, stirring every couple of minutes until all the chips are melted.
- Working one at a time, coat each date in the melted chocolate, making sure all sides are covered.
- Place the chocolate coated date into the bowl of chopped almonds and coat well, gently pressing the nuts into the chocolate. Set aside on a dish.
- Refrigerate the dates for at least 30 minutes for the chocolate to harden before serving. Store leftover dates in a sealed container in the fridge.
Notes
- For the chopped nut coating, use whatever nuts you prefer: walnuts, cashews, pecans, etc...or a mix!
- I use dark chocolate for the coating, but you can go ahead and use any grade of chocolate you prefer. Melting the chocolate is the same, no matter which chocolate you use.
- Stuff the dates with whole almonds before closing them for dipping!
- Sprinkle some sea salt on the chocolate coated date for the sweet/salty combination!

I'll admit I didn't discover how wonderful Medjool dates are until a friend got me on them a year ago. Now I love them!
