What is affogato?

An affogato is an Italian dessert that is simply hot espresso poured over a scoop of plain ice cream. The hot espresso melts the ice cream, while the ice cream also cools the espresso, and what you end up with is a deliciously creamy coffee dessert to end your meal. Tea affogato follows the same idea, but it's using tea instead of espresso!

Instructions

The Tea

Without getting too technical, espresso is a concentrated type of coffee, usually served as a "shot". To simulate that idea with tea and to make a concentrated version, we'll steep one black teabag in ¼ cup of hot water, which is the amount you normally get with a serving of espresso.

A round tea bag in a glass measuring cup with water.

The Ice Cream

To keep things classic as a coffee affogato, we'll use plain vanilla ice cream with the strong tea.

A square glass with two scoops of vanilla ice cream, a small glass pitcher containing brown tea.

How To Serve It

Place your scoop(s) of vanilla ice cream in a glass and have the concentrated tea on the side. Pour the hot tea over the ice cream and enjoy!

Tea affogato is a dessert all on its own, but serving it with a crisp biscotti or cookie for dipping will perfect it! One of my Chinese Almond Cookies would also be a great partner!

Commonly Asked Questions

Vanilla ice cream in a black and white dish, a rectangular almond coated cookie, green liquid in a small white pitcher.
Can I use different flavored tea bags?

Yes, use whatever tea you prefer! This would be delicious with Earl Grey tea, matcha tea, or oolong. You can even go herbal and use peppermint tea, chamomile, or ginger! I, personally, think it tastes really delicious with matcha tea!

What if I want my tea more concentrated?

For a more concentrated tea, use the same amount of water, but steep two bags instead of one.

Can I use loose leaf tea?

Yes! Either place the loose leaf tea in a tea bag before steeping, or be sure to pour the tea through a strainer before serving.

Can I use a different flavored ice cream?

Yes! Instead of using vanilla cream, you could use other flavors like mint, chocolate, or even tea-flavored ice creams! Different flavored ice cream will give a different flavor profile that's sure to be delicious!
