After having poke bowls for the first time while on vacation in San Jose, California (and I've also since made them at home), we've determined we love poke bowls. LOVE them.
So imagine how excited I was when I discovered that there are poke bowl restaurants in Hong Kong! Woohoo!
There are a handful of poke bowl restaurants, but POKE HK was the first one we tried. You will find POKE HK in the Causeway Bay neighborhood and it is quite the hole-in-the-wall kind of restaurant...my favorite kind! Nothing fancy, just some tables and stools and good ol' poke bowls.
As with most poke bowl places, you build your own bowl based on the options available. You usually start with a base, such as rice (brown or sushi), salad, or half and half. Then you pick your protein, which is usually some sort of fish. At POKE HK, they offer mushrooms as a protein option if you don't want to do fish.
After you've chosen your protein, it's time to move on to the toppings! Three toppings are included, and a few have an extra charge, but there are plenty to pick from. Then you pick a dressing and whatever final garnishes you want! There are so many ways you can customize your poke bowl!
If, however, you find all the choices too overwhelming and the decision-making daunting, they also have pre-set bowls you can pick from. Either way, you just choose what you want and they put it all together for you! Pay for your meal and have a seat while they make it...they'll deliver the bowls right to you!
Don't have time to sit and eat? Or maybe there aren't any seats left? Choose handy-dandy take-out and your poke bowl will come in a box, ready for you to take with you to eat wherever you decide to plant yourself.
On this day that my husband and I went, he got a salmon poke bowl, topped with pickled ginger, avocado, fresh seaweed, and onions.
Me? I went for a salmon poke bowl as well, with edamame beans, pickled ginger, and tofu in a peanutty sauce.
Don't these just LOOK yummy?? They are like works of art in every bowl!
I love the blend of different textures and flavors...no boring meal here! And the ingredients are so fresh and healthy...it's just so so so good!
Considering how much I love poke bowls, I am SO happy there are now restaurants like POKE HK in Hong Kong! Not that I can't make them myself, but I do enjoy having someone else do the cooking once in a while! Who wouldn't?
