Substitutions and Variations
Beef: As we already know, burgers aren't limited to beef! These burgers can be made with chicken (grilled, fried), fish (think salmon, cod, halibut, grilled, fried), grilled portabello mushroom.
Spices: Simplify the burger seasonings to salt and pepper (which is how burger patties are normally cooked), or try adding other seasonings like chili powder, cayenne, or even Worcestershire sauce!
Toppings: For this recipe, I've topped our burger bowls with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, diced red onion, and grated cheddar, the traditional burger fixings. But go for bacon, caramelized onions, avocado, fried egg, jalapeno peppers, pineapple...any of your burger favorites!
Greens: No need to keep it to lettuce. Since these are bowls and you don't have to worry about what will stay in between two buns, anything goes! I love making these burger bowls with broccoli for more substance!

Cheese: I use cheddar, but any of the usual options like Swiss, Monterey Jack, mozzarella, etc...all delicious!
Burger sauce: You can substitute the mayonnaise in the burger sauce with Greek yogurt for a bit of tang. You can also use other common burger sauce options like barbecue sauce, teriyaki sauce, or try a Greek yogurt Caesar dressing, Greek yogurt tzatziki, Chipotle Mayo, or Yogurt Mint Sauce!
A side of fries anyone? Add some baked fries, roasted potatoes (try Crispy Roasted Smashed Potatoes!), or my favorite: roasted sweet potatoes to the bowl and you've got the full meal deal!
